Message to Muslims - Pres. Obama Speech

"Americans are not your enemy" - Obama
Washington, D.C. - Tuesday January 27, 2009

President Obama chose the Arabic-languagesatellite station Al-Arabiya for his first TV interview since theelection. Sitting down with host Hisham Melhem, Obama said that his"job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americansare not your enemy."

In the interview, President Obama mentions that he has Muslimfamily members and has lived before in Muslim countries. He calls fora "language of respect" when conversing with the Muslimworld. Obama also describes the need to communicate to the Americanpeople that "the Muslim world is filled with extraordinarypeople who simply want to live their lives and see their childrenlive better lives."

While Obama speaks of mutual respect, communication, and greaterunderstanding, he acknowledges that "ultimately, people aregoing to judge me not by my words but by my actions and myadministration's actions." Many in the Muslim world will watchthis interview and respond with "so far, so good." Then they will want to wait and see.

Obama's "Message to the Muslims"
Washington, D.C. - Wednesday January 21, 2009

In his Inaugural Address, President Obama directed a few commentsto listeners in the Muslim world. His words were refreshingly directand no-nonsense:

"To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based onmutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West:Know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption anddeceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrongside of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing tounclench your fist."

Earlier in the speech, President Obama praised as a strength the"patchwork heritage" of the United States, recognizing that"we are a nation of Christians, Muslims, Jews and Hindus – andnonbelievers."

When reciting the oath of office, Obama proudly pronounced his full name:
BarackHussein Obama.

A previous editorialin the Los Angeles Times recommended that it would be perfectly appropriate for him to use his full name, without shame. Obama'sMuslim heritage should not be taboo, nor should be his attempts to reach out to Muslims.

There is much anticipation about the future of the Obama administration. If these initial steps mean anything, it is that President Obama will be engaged in the Muslim world, in a way that will hopefully move people towards honest dialog and action.

How was Obama's speech received in the USA?

Tigers Or Terrorists -

"I say potato, you say patatoe - I say tomato, you say tamatoe - I say freedom fighter, you say "Islamic jihadist guerrila terrorist

If a "Muslim" does a suicide attack - it is called "Islamic Jihad"
Hindu woman (Tamil Tigers are Hindus and the Sinhalese are Buddhistsdid it , today - in Sri Lanka, and what is it called? - (Guerrilla Warfare)

Why not "Hinduistic Jihad"? Where is there any mention of religion in these stories? (You won't find it). Tamil Tigers are Hindusfrom the Tamil state on the eastern coast of India and Sinhalese (also spelled Sinhalese) are Buddhists who believe they are the "chosen" to protect their religion in this Island country.

Question: When do Sinhalese rebelsbecome "Buddhist Jihadists"? What would make a "Tamil guerrila" become a "Hindu Tiger Terrorist"? And when do civilians become "suspected terrorist sympathizers"? And who are the real insurgents anyway?
Good questions.

READ - the this story and see how it would look if it was about the same event in GAZA - (remember the keywords): Here are a few keywords to reconsider while reading today's news: rebels (religious extremists?); guerrillas (Hindu militants);combatants (Hindu jihadists); confrontation (Hinduist Jihad); battles (Hinduist terrorism).

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Yesterday (Sunday, Feb 8) - a woman (Hindu extremist woman) from the Tamil Tigers (Hinduist Tiger Terrorists), blew up herself and killed 24 others in a suicide bombing (Hinduist suicide mission), in what is being called a "guerilla warfare" (Hinduistic Terrorism?) against . . .

Obama Ends 4 Wars (at once)

US president’s bold first week "Ends Four Wars"
Image
Barack Obama
February 2, 2009:
Barack Obama ended four wars during his first week as president. With just a few words and strokes of his pen, the president ended the war on terror, the war on Islam, the war on science, and the war on women.

In his first executive orders, Obama effectively dismantled the elaborate structures that supported the Bush administration’s “war on terror.” On January 22, he ordered the closure of the Guantanamo prison and a halt to the much-criticised military commission trials.

He closed secret CIA prisons, required that the Red Cross have access to detainees and mandated that interrogations of detainees — whether by the military, the CIA or anyone else  — comply with the rules laid out in the Army Field Manual.

By giving his first televised interview to Al Arabiya, a channel watched throughout the Arab world, Obama made it clear that the US  isn’t at war with Islam itself. “The Muslim world is filled with extraordinary people who simply want to live their lives and see their children live better lives,” he said.

“There are extremist organisations — whether Muslim or any other faith ... that will use faith as a justification for violence. We cannot paint with a broad brush a faith as a consequence of the violence that is done in that faith’s name.

Our administration (will) be very clear in distinguishing between organisations like al-Qaida —  and people who may disagree with my administration” in legitimate ways.

War on science

Obama also ended the undeclared Bush administration war on science. In his inaugural speech, he promised to “restore science to its rightful place.”

Reversing years of Bush administration disregard of scientific evidence on global climate change, Obama ordered the Transportation Department to set new fuel-efficiency standards and ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to rethink its Bush-era refusal to allow states to impose anti-pollution standards more stringent than federal ones.

The undeclared war on women? Also over. Obama reversed the “Mexico City policy,” which prohibited recipients of US foreign-assistance funds from providing abortions or even providing information about abortions.

Some estimate that as many as 500,000 women worldwide have died since 2001 as a result of botched abortions, many of which might have been prevented if the Mexico City policy hadn’t pushed abortions and abortion counselling underground in many countries.

The “war on terror” was practically a gift to Osama bin Laden: Our detention and interrogation policies fuelled far more terrorism than they prevented. Obama’s job is just beginning.  Still, not bad for a week’s work.

Obama Promises "Respect to Muslims"

Obama promises "Respect" to the Muslim World

"...Obama should also take into account the role Muslim Americans can play in affecting foreign policy. During election season, former Secretary of State General Colin Powell made special note of the patriotism of Muslim Americans, who unfortunately remain invisible in our mainstream public discourses, except in the context of terrorism."

In his first interview with Dubai-based Arabic TV network Al Arabiya, President Barack Obama connected with Muslim audiences, saying, “I have Muslim members of my family. I have lived in Muslim countries.”

News reports from around the Muslim world show an upsurge of optimism as America inaugurated its first African American president last week. This optimism is not just the product of President Barack Obama’s race or his middle name, Hussein, but rather a reflection of his thoughtful leadership.

In his inaugural address President Obama displayed rare perceptiveness by asserting, “To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect.” He followed this with a warning “to those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West, ... your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.”

With these words, he affirmed the need for all nations to find ways to solve their internal problems without blaming them on the Western world, while simultaneously acknowledging America’s role: “... As the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself. America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.”

Obama’s words of hope present Muslims with a new opportunity for engagement. By rebuilding their communities on a positive vision of economic, educational and political opportunities for all citizens, Muslims can effectively counter the morally bankrupt ideology of religious extremism so abhorred in normative Islam.

Obama assured Muslims that they would not be alone in this battle. He vowed to defeat terrorism “in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals.” This means not only banning torture and renditions, but also stereotyping and finger-pointing.

In his Al Arabiya interview, he underscored the need to “look forward and not simply think about all the conflicts and tragedies of the past.”

To create a clean break from the past, Obama should, like the European Union, ban language linking the faith of Islam to terrorism, and make ill-defined words like “Islamofascism”, “jihadist” and “Islamist” relics of the past. Several American military and security experts, including Dr. Douglas Streusand, and Lt. Col. Harry Tunnell of the National Defense University, concur that rhetorically tying terrorism to Islam only alienates Muslims, without solving the problem of terrorism.

President Obama can also usher in a new era of US-Muslim cooperation through clear changes in policy and a new use of diplomacy. For example, foreign assistance programmes should be re-examined to make sure that they balance security imperatives with social investments in health, education, innovation and entrepreneurship. And the rejuvenated State Department could expand educational exchange programmes around the globe, particularly with countries in the Muslim world.

One of the most difficult issues Obama inherits is the yet unresolved conflict between Israel and the Arab world. In the words of Gandhi, an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind, and this sadly expresses the reality of this conflict. An assertive and neutral America will be able to break the cycle of conflict on the basis of mutually assured security, dignity and prosperity.

In addition, Obama will have to put forth the idea of a grand détente, providing all regional players – including Syria and Iran – a real stake in shaping the future of their region.

Obama should make clear that in helping the Muslim world, America will not seek waiver in its values and ideals – championing democratisation, re-establishing the rule of law, expanding the notions of religious freedom, and upholding the ideals of equality, especially for women and minorities.

A 2008 Gallup Poll shows that majorities in the Muslim world share many of these values. A friendly America can strengthen these attitudes.

In engaging with the Muslim world, Obama should also take into account the role Muslim Americans can play in affecting foreign policy. During election season, former Secretary of State General Colin Powell made special note of the patriotism of Muslim Americans, who unfortunately remain invisible in our mainstream public discourses, except in the context of terrorism.

Imagine President Obama, eschewing the invariable attacks he may face and publicly seeking the help of Muslim Americans to shape his new policy agenda towards the Muslim world. This very effort will undermine the narrative at the heart of anti-Americanism – the perception in the Muslim world that America is at war with Islam.
