The Roman Catholic Church ~ startled the religious and secular world today, with the official announcement - admitting:
"ISLAM has now become the world's largest religion!" (the Vatican newspaper) said in Sunday's "Vatican City"
'For the first time in history, we are no longer at the top: Muslims have overtaken us,' Monsignor Vittorio Formenti said in an interview with the Vaticannewspaper L'Osservatore Romano.
Formenti compiles the Vatican's yearbook. He said that Catholics accounted for 17.4 percent of the world population — a stable percentage —
While Muslims are more than estimated, around twenty five per cent (25%) - Yusuf Estes
"It is true that while Muslim families, as is well known, continue to make alot of children, Christian ones on the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer", the monsignor said. Formenti also said, the data refers to 2006.
"Numbers for Muslims were put together by Muslim countries and then provided to the United Nations", he said, stating the Vatican could only vouch for its own information.

Even considering all types of Christians, not just Catholics, all together are almost 30% of the world's population (today in 2024 it is less than 24%).
Spokesmen for the Vatican and the United Nations did not immediately return phone calls asking for comments, last Sunday.
