Here is an email sent to Sheik Yusuf Estes asking about "protection against evil & magic":

assalamo alaikum - dear sir,
i heard somewhere you can protect yourself from magic and jinns, if you do something called 'ruqaya'.

Could you please tell me what is 'ruqayah' and what is the way for doing it?

i really urgently need to know.

so please, if you can answer my question as soon as possible. jazakumullah was salam

Question: Does ruqyah work against magic and evil?

Answer: Bismillah, Al Hamdulillah was salat was salam ala Rasoolullah.

Yes. This is exactly what Allah Subhannah wa Ta'ala and our prophet, peace be upon him, prescribed for such cases.

We find it mentioned in Quran and in the sunnah for a person to read Quran for protection from the jinn and magic.

The surahs (chapters) to be recited for protection from evil are mentioned in the hadith (narrations from our prophet, peace be upon him).

Some of them to be rectited include the following:

    • Surah Fatihah (first one)
    • Surah Al Ikhlaas (112)
    • Surah Al Falqa (113)
    • Surah An Naas (114)
    • Ayatul Kursi (2:255)

These are the primary ones used by the prophet, peace be upon him.

The proper method is:

  • Hold the hands up in front of the face
  • Recite Quran verses into the hands
  • Wipe the hands over the entire body.

Some more tips for protection of Allah:

  • Pray to Allah with all sincerity and seek refuge with Allah from this type of evil
  • Stay away from evil things & evil people who do not try to please Allah
  • Avoid pictures hanging in your house, get rid of any statues or figurines or dolls or images of humans or animals
  • Do not listen to musical instruments and such things
  • Stay away from things that take your mind away from the devotion to Allah
  • Stay close to people who love Allah and have good and sound knowledge about true beliefs in Islam
  • Do not hang out with people of the deviant groups (click for details)
  • Stay on the main path
  • Stay close to Allah

He will protect you if you are sincere. Everything is with Allah for the outcome.

Salam (peace) Did you hear about the evil eye?
Do you believe people's envy and jealousy could affect someone?
This article is only a small part of what Islam reveals on the topic.
And then, what about 'possession'? Demonic possession of humans?
Islam also has much to say on this topic and the cures for these situations as well.

assalam alaikom, i read the answer about the marriage of aisha, you explained it right and now i can answer that to whoever asks me, i can understand the situation they were at that time.
even thought i wasn't understanding this i was so much sure that there was nothing wrong about their marriage, i trust muhammad peace be upon and beleive in god and muhammad his messanger, jazak allah shaikh

sallaam, thank u for posting very timely i was just looking into this subject. quick question tho. what if u have to visit family that are not Muslim and have pictures of people and dogs in home? is it possible they may have some bad jinn around them? and also a weird occurrence happened we noticed that a old picture of my grandparents completely disappeared, all that we found was an empty picture frame without picture and glass which were missing next to front door,(where the picture was placed was on table by door originally) we really can not find picture anywhere. is it possible it was possessed by bad jinn, and when i did my sallaats it vanished? my Muslim sister n law said this is what happened to this roach that we found dead next to front door she said it was bad jinn that was trying to get out but never made it while i was praying and died from the sallaat. hope u may answer these suspicions __jazakalakier :-)
