Fabricated Hadeeth About Surahs in Quran?

Active Image

What is the truth of hadeeths about surahs (chapters) in Quran?
- Like Yaa Seen, An-Naba', Al-Waqiah, Al Mulk, etc.
And how can we know for sure about these "hadeeths" anyway?

"I have head from Jamal Ud-Deen Zarabozo in Colorado, hadeeths about these surahs are weak and fabricated. Is this true? And what do scholars say about these hadeeths?" - A. K

.

Praise be to Allah, the One Who Sent down the Quran and Preserves it.

We know, Al Hamdulillah (Praise to Allah), the Quran is Protected and Preserved by Allah against any alterations or changes or additions or deletions until the Last Days. Al Hamdulillah (Praise be to Allah).

So, there is today in Quran the exact same words and teachings as were originally revealed to our blessed prophet, Muhammad, peace be upon him. The Quran is the only book on earth, that if we lost all of the books on earth, we could bring it back in its original language, original form, chapter for chapter, verse for verse, word for word and letter for letter. Al Hamdulillah (The Praise is to Allah).

Regarding the teachings and sayings of our beloved prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, we have something very amazing. It is often referred to by scholars as "The beauty of the deen (Way of Islam)". This beauty of Islam is the ability to trace back to the source of each and every hadeeth. This is the isnad (chain of narrators).

Only in Islam do we find this wonderful and accurate way of verifying each and every saying or teaching of our beloved prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. No other religion can offer such detailed and accurate method of verification. The very early scholars of Islam realized the mistakes of the former monotheistic religious scholars (from Judaism and Christianity) and began early on to preserve not only the hadeeths (sayings and teachings), but also the isnad (the names and information about the people who were narrating the hadeeths).

For instance:

There is the authentic and often quoted hadeeth of the prophet, peace be upon him, telling us about the entire Quran and the reward for reciting it. We know that whoever reads one letter of the Qur’aan will have one good deed is recorded for him:

‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Whoever reads one letter from the Book of Allaah will earn one good (hasanah) thereby. One good deed is equal to ten good deeds the like of it. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter.’”
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2910; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2327

Regarding Surah Al-Mulk (number 67 - 30 verses), there are saheeh (authentic) ahaadeeth (plural of hadeeth) which speak of its virtues:

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is a soorah of the Qur’aan containing thirty verses which have interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is the soorah Tabaarak alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk.”
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2891; Ahmad, 7634; Abu Dawood, 1400; Ibn Maajah, 3786.  This hadeeth was classed as hasan (good) by al-Tirmidhi and by al-Albaani in Saheeh (authentic) al-Tirmidhi, 3/6.

Another hadeeth which speaks of its virtues.

It was narrated from Jaabir, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never used to sleep until he had recited Alif-laam-meem tanzeel [al-Sajdah] and Tabaarak alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk. [al-Mulk].
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2892; Ahmad, 14249. Al-Albaani said in Saheeh (authentic) al-Tirmidhi (3/6) that this hadeeth is saheeh (authentic)

There are many saheeh (authentic) and hasan (good) ahadeeth (plural of hadeeth) telling us of the virtures of the Quran in general and some ahadeeth also telling us benefits of reciting individual chapters. The following examples are well researched and known to be accurately preserved.

Surah Al Fatihah (the first chapter of the Quran - 7 verses), has a number of ahadeeth talking about it, the benefits, even a cure for sickness and the guidance of Allah.

Surah Al Ikhlaas (number 112- 4 verses), it is mentioned in hadeeth to be worth one third of the Quran.

Surah Al Falaq (number 113 -  5 verses) and Surah An Naas (number 114 - 6 verses), are mentioned in hadeeth to be read before going to sleep at night for protection from the shayton and other things as well.

Also, reciting surah Al Ikhlaas (above) along with these after each salat s good.

From Surah Baqarah (number 2 - 286 verses), there are individual verses to be recited after prayers and in the morning and night, such as ayatul kursi (chapter 2, verse 255) and the last three ayahs (chapter 2, verses 284, 285 and 286).

There is an example of an authentic hadeeth saying, "Surah Al Mulk (chapter 67 - 30 verses) is one of the surahs containing warnings that were very difficult for the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)".

Here is what a narration with the commentary on it would look like:

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Hood, al-Waaqi’ah, al-Mursalaat, ‘Amma yatsaa’iloon [al-Naba’] and Idha al-‘shamsu kuwwirat [al-Takweer] have made my hair grey.”
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3297. classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani, al-Saheehah, 955)

But not all things being said about the hadeeth of Quran are accruate.

Along the way, some people have invented things not in keeping with what is revealed in Quran and from the teachings of our beloved prophet, peace be upon him. These inventions are called mawdu'ah (fabricated). Some stories cannot be confirmed due to a serious weakness in the chain of narrators and should be abandoned. These are called da'eef (weak hadeeth). Some scholars allow these da'eef hadeeth when talking about virtuous good deeds as long as they conform to other similar authentic hadeeths, but no scholars permit these da'eef hadeeth to be used in reference to anything related to beliefs, rulings or judgments.

For instance, there are a number of da'eef and mawdu'ah hadeeth mentioning rewards and cures from parts of the Quran. These are not acceptable and we should encourage our brothers and sisters in Islam to reveiew this page (you may link to this page or copy it and email it out) to help preserve our beautiful deen - Islam, from corruptions.

About any virtues for reciting surah An Naba’ and the reward for reading it, we do not know of anything that applies specifically to this surah.

Regarding any virtues of Surah al-Waaqi’ah, there is a hadeeth which speaks of its virtues, but that hadeeth is not saheeh.

They claim it came from Shujaa’ from Abi Faatimah that ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan (may Allaah be pleased with him). They said he visited Ibn Mas’ood when he was sick.
He said, “What is hurting?”
He said, “My sins.”
He said, “What do you need?”
He said, “The mercy of my Lord.”
He said, “Shall we not call the doctor for you?”
He said, “The doctor made me ill.”
He said, “Shall I order that your regular income [from the state] be restored to you?”
He said, “You did not let me have it before today and I have no need of it now.”
He said, ‘Then leave it to your family and dependents.”
He said, “I have taught them something which, if they say it, they will never become poor. I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say,
‘Whoever recites al-Waaqi’ah every night will never become poor.”
(Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan, 2/491. The (chain of narrators of this hadeeth) was classed as da’eef (weak) by Shaykh al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah, 289).

With regard to the virtues of Surah Yaa-Seen, there are ahaadeeth (plurah of hadeeth) concerning its virtues which are not saheeh.  Here is one of them:

They claim It was narrated that Anas said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Everything has a heart and the heart of the Qur’aan is Ya-Seen. Whoever recites Ya-Seen, Allaah will record for him the reward of reading the Qur’aan ten times.’”
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2887. He said, It is not saheeh because of its isnaad, and its isnaad is da’eef (weak). Al-Albaani said in al-Da’eefah (169): (it is) mawdoo’ (fabricated)).

The same applies to another:

They say Abu Hurayrah, says that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:  “Allah recited Ta-Ha and Ya-Seen one thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth. When the angels heard the Qur’aan they said, ‘Glad tidings to the nation to whom this will be revealed, and glad tidings to the hearts that will bear this, and glad tidings to the tongues that will speak these words.’”
(Narrated by al-Daarimi, 3280. al-Albaani said in al-Da’eefah (1248): (it is) munkar (a form of da’eef or weak hadeeth)).

Here is another:

They say Ma’qal ibn Yassaar, which said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Recite Ya-Seen over your dead.”
(Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3121; Ibn Maajah, 1448. Shaykh al-Albaani said: With regard to reciting Soorat Ya-Seen over the deceased and turning him to face the qiblah, there is no saheeh hadeeth to this effect. Ahkaam al-Janaa’iz, p. 11)

And this hadeeth:

They claim it is from  Anas ibn Maalik, may Allah be pleased with him, saying the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Whoever enters the graveyard and recites Soorat Yaa-Seen, (the torment) will be reduced for them that day, and he will have hasanaat equivalent to the number of people in the graveyard.”
Shaykh al-Albaani said in al-Da’eefah (1246): It is mawdoo’ (fabricated). It was narrated by al-Tha’labi in his Tafseer (3/161/2)

Best thing to do is to learn from the real scholars of Islam who have studied and memorized from other real scholars of Islam.

And Allaah knows best.
