Crowd in line to see the cloak of Muhammad ﷺ
{Crowd listens to Recitation of Quran}
Cloak worn by Muhammad ﷺ preserved for 1,400 years.
The cloak worn by the prophet has been carefully preserved for nearly 1,400 years, attracting a large crowd to the mosque where it is kept by descendants of Uwais Al Qarni, an early Muslim who gave it to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya and Fatih Mayor Ergün Turan were among the dignitaries attending the “reopening” ceremony for the cloak. The crowd in line got to listen to a recitation of verses from the Quran as soon visitors were invited in.
The cloak is fully protected behind glass. Then a few special visitors are allowed into the room. Outside, women and men line up to be admitted through separate entrances (one for women, the other for men). No complaints, as they were happy to have the “once in a year” chance to see something belonging to Muhammad ﷺ. Some burst into tears (women and men) and others recite prayers.
Only put on public display during Ramadan.
When the COVID-19 pandemic broke in Turkey, the display was off limits.
