Canadian conservative federal government quietly drops proposal to uncover Muslim women if they vote in Canadian elections. This comes at the same time the issue of coverings is heating up overseas. President Nicolas Sarkozy declared the Islamic burka is “not welcome” in France.

Steven Fletcher, Canada’s Minister of State for Democratic Reform, confirmed Thursday ...

..that the government does not intend to proceed with laws requiring voters to uncover their faces.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the minority government still supports the idea of forcing voters to reveal their faces.

However, for the time being they won’t move forward as all three opposition parties have signalled they are not going to support such legislation.
