Earthquakes — Signs from Allah warning of the Last Day (Yawm al-Qiyamah). How earthquakes are understood in Islam — especially in the end times:

Earthquakes are Allah's Signs

Earthquakes are seen in Islam not as random geological events, but as signs or warnings from Allah for people to reflect, repent, and return to righteousness.

Quran – Surah Al-Zalzalah (The Earthquake)

"When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake..."
(Surah Az-Zalzalah 99:1 – ReciteQuran.com/99:1)

This surah describes the final massive quake that will shake the earth at the end of time—so powerful it will cause the earth to throw out its burdens (dead bodies, secrets, etc.), and people will be shown their deeds, even the smallest.

Earthquakes Signal the Last Day

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"The Hour will not come until... earthquakes will increase in number..."
(Sahih Bukhari 7121; Sahih Muslim 2901)

Frequent earthquakes are considered among the Minor Signs of the approaching Day of Judgment. These signs are meant to alert believers to prepare for the greater events ahead.

Major Earthquakes Are Signs

One of the Major Signs (Ashraat as-Saa’ah) is an earth-shattering event. According to Hadith, one of the last events before the actual Day of Judgment is a tremendous quake:

"Then the Trumpet will be blown, and everyone in the heavens and the earth will fall unconscious, except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again and they will be resurrected..."
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68 – ReciteQuran.com/39:68)

The first blast is associated with massive destruction and likely earthquakes. The second blast brings resurrection.

Earthquakes remind us of:

  • Allah's Power and Control over creation.

  • The fragility of life and reality of death.

  • The certainty of the Resurrection and the Day of Judgment.

  • The need to repent, do good deeds, and seek forgiveness before it’s too late.

Among the signs of the Last Day mentioned in Hadith, earthquakes are a part of the global turmoil, natural disasters, and moral decay. Earthquakes are part of a broader pattern to shake sleeping people out of their beds.
